Analysis of Paranoia by Shirley Jackson. Shirley Jackson is an American author most remembered for her chilling and controversial short story The Lottery, about a violent undercurrent in a small American town. Paranoia was first published in the August 5, 2013, issue of The New Yorker, long after the authors death in 1965. Jacksons children found the story in her papers in the Library of Congress. If you missed the story on the newsstand, it is available for free on The New Yorkers website. And of course, you can very likely find a copy at your local library. Plot Mr. Halloran Beresford, a businessman in New York, leaves his office quite pleased with himself for remembering his wifes birthday. He stops to buy chocolates on the way home and plans to take his wife to dinner and a show. But his commute home becomes fraught with panic and danger as he realizes someone is stalking him. No matter where he turns, the stalker is there. In the end, he does make it home, but after a brief moment of relief, the reader realizes Mr. Beresford still might not be safe after all. Real or Imagined? Your opinion of this story will depend almost entirely on what you make of the title, Paranoia. On first reading, I felt the title seemed to dismiss Mr. Beresfords troubles as nothing but a fantasy. I also felt it over-explained the story and left no room for interpretation. But on further reflection, I realized I hadnt given Jackson enough credit. Shes not offering any easy answers. Almost every frightening incident in the story can be explained as both a real threat and an imagined one, which creates a constant sense of uncertainty. For example, when an unusually aggressive shopkeeper tries to block Mr. Beresfords exit from his store, its hard to say whether hes up to something sinister or just wants to make a sale. When a bus driver refuses to stop at the appropriate stops, instead just saying, Report me, he could be plotting against Mr. Beresford, or he could simply be lousy at his job. The story leaves the reader on the fence about whether Mr. Beresfords paranoia is justified, thus leaving the reader - rather poetically - a bit paranoid herself. Some Historical Context According to Jacksons son, Laurence Jackson Hyman, in an interview with The New Yorker, the story was most likely written in the early 1940s, during World War II. So there would have been a constant sense of danger and distrust in the air, both in relation to foreign countries and in relation to the U.S. governments attempts to uncover espionage at home. This sense of distrust is obvious as Mr. Beresford scans the other passengers on the bus, looking for someone who might help him. He sees a man who looks as though he might be a foreigner. Foreigner, Mr. Beresford thought, while he looked at the man, foreigner, foreign plot, spies. Better not rely on any foreigner †¦ In a completely different vein, its hard not to read Jacksons story without thinking of Sloan Wilsons 1955 novel about conformity, The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, which was later made into a movie starring Gregory Peck. Jackson writes: There were twenty small-size gray suits like Mr. Beresfords on every New York block, fifty men still clean-shaven and pressed after a day in an air-cooled office, a hundred small men, perhaps, pleased with themselves for remembering their wives birthdays. Though the stalker is distinguished by a small mustache (as opposed to the standard clean-shaven faces that surround Mr. Beresford) and a light hat (which must have been unusual enough to grab Mr. Beresfords attention), Mr. Beresford rarely seems to get a clear view of him after the initial sighting. This raises the possibility that Mr. Beresford is not seeing the same man over and over, but rather different men all dressed similarly. Though Mr. Beresford seems happy with his life, I think it would be possible to develop an interpretation of this story in which it is the sameness all around him that is what actually unnerves him. Entertainment Value Lest I wring all the life out of this story by over-analyzing it, let me finish by saying that no matter how you interpret the story, it is a heart-pumping, mind-bending, terrific read. If you believe Mr. Beresford is being stalked, youll fear his stalker - and in fact, like Mr. Beresford, youll fear everybody else, too. If you believe the stalking is all in Mr. Beresfords head, youll fear whatever misguided action hes about to take in response to the perceived stalking.

Although he refuses to free Ariel and enslaves Caliban, Prospero is really a beneficent ruler, never intending to injure even his enemies. Early in the play, Prospero appears callous and cruel, especially in his treatment of Ariel and Caliban. KFC’s product differentiation is most impacted by location, service, and physical characteristics.Consumers value a variety of products and because each consumer has different tastes, the organization will attempt to pry consumers away from current competitors by offering physically differentiated products. KFC must differentiate itself vertically, meaning the company will set itself apart from competitors by the actual quality of its products (Waldman and Jensen,  n. d. ). However, KFC’s management must wisely choose upon its locations. The company’s largest competitor, Pollo Campero, operates in 14 different locations in El Salvador and poses a high threat to the company.In addition to location, an organization’s products are highly differentiated by service. With the presence of Pollo Campero, KFC must not only rely on good food but also provide exceptional customer service that will retain its customer base. Additionally, the organization has the capital required to increase production in assets. Product differentiation and cost leadership are advantages that KFC utilizes in edging out competitors. Recommendations KFC has choices to make in expanding in El Salvador. One recommendation is for KFC to contact the lone KFC operator in El Salvador to persuade him/her to open more franchises in San Salvador with a goal of gaining more name recognition to expand into other El Salvadoran cities. KFC’s strengths and name recognition will create more opportunities in El Salvador. Another recommendation is to have the lone franchisee to find out if interest in opening new KFC stores exists among El Salvador’s entrepreneurs.The franchisee could be paid a bonus for recruiting applicants that receive franchise approval. Both of these recommendations depend on KFC equaling or surpassing food quality and customer service of chief rival, Pollo Campero, and by using product differentiation and cost leadership. Jereon Groenewegen, author of Screaming and crying android: voice and presence in Chinese popular music, is Dutch, however he is a researcher of popular music in Chinese languages and an interpreter at Chinese cultural events in the Netherlands. If you have ever picked up a Chinese book or watched a Chinese drama, there are at least fifty objects in each piece that is used as a symbol for something part of life. In addition, each song or voice described in the article, the author finds a second meaning and interpretation for it. Screaming and crying androids seeks to understand the voice and teach one that it is much more complex than what meets the eye. It is not just for talking, singing, or yelling. In this article, one will see how the voice is part of the body and how it defines an individual. Groenewegen gave me the feeling that he was actually present at the artists concert listening and observing every beat and lyrics of every song. Antoine Hennion wrote that a persons voice is conceived as physiological and psychological (Groenewegen). In the article, it states, Songwriters and producers have a stronger presence in the artwork than the singer, I strongly agree. It was originally the songwriters or producers masterwork that led the singers to have a top hit single or cover. The writer had their own vision and their own voice put into it. It is difficult for an individual to tell someone how he or she feels. However, they can write down their true feelings on paper and then have it project through beats and lyrics of a song. The lyrics that are projected belong to the songwriter, unless of the course the songwriter and singer is the same person. However, in this case, let one just say they are not the same person. One can say that it is the artists heart and soul being poured out, but is it really? Was it really the artists own heart and soul? Or are they just singing what was on the paper? I do give them credit for making it sound good and their own. Songs evolve and get pass down orally, so eventually replications of the same song will become something new and unlike the original, which could be a great thing. Nevertheless, it was not initially their feelings and voice delivered. I believe that songwriters and producers do not get as much credit as they should. Just keep in mind that the voice an individual hears is actually the man or women not in front of that microphone. If one picks up a Chinese based book like The Joy Luck Club, watch a Chinese drama, or pay attention to Chinese lyrics, one can see that they hold many traditions. Perhaps the best place to find traditional music is at a funeral The music is heavy with percussion and carried by the mournful melodies of the suona, a double-reed instrument. However, nowadays, C-pop is the abbreviation for Chinese popular music. Not only does it cover Chinese pop, but also ballads, R;B, Chinese rock, Chinese hip hop, and Chinese ambient music (C-pop). As one can see that the world of music has evolved. One no longer has to go to such a depressing location like a funeral to enjoy popular music. Music ranges from a wide variety of pitches, tones, and emotions. One just has to find the right one. Groenewegen uses many song references to support each of his ideas of why singers do the things they do. He states, Lyrics often present romances as nostalgic past events, even while they are budding. Groenewegen researches deep into the different simple sounds of music. To him, different genres use a different voice like screaming for rock and punk, crying for romance and love, sneezing for musicals, and gurgling for diversity. Teng Geer and Cui Jian have introduced something called shout singing to the Chinese. Shout singing is a vocal technique used to instead of shouting at the top of their voices, it is restrained in the back of the throat, creating a rasp. This technique is a form of folk traditions and uncivilized individualism (Groenewegen). Although this method is uncouth it quite popular and has evolved since the 1990s and early 2000s. The article states, Popular music is dominated by the pathos of romantic ballads. When one watches a romantic movie, there are bombardments of melancholy scenes that provide them with melancholy background music. However, crying is not shown through the music because it is not entertaining (Groenewegen). According to Groenewegen, in the song Achoo-Cha-Cha sneezes represent boyfriends. Every day when we hear someone sneeze, we tell him or her that someone is thinking of him or her. Has one ever thought where that saying came from? I just recently learned that it came from the Chinese. According to Grace Changs lyrics, the sneezes are induced by absent lovers thinking of her, and she herself sneezes. Every sound and voice made is a movement of the body and it could define a person. Screaming and crying androids, is an article I want to suggest to everyone that enjoys learning about new cultures. It is not a very hard piece to read, and actually quite simple to understand after the first or second read through. I learned that popular music is not only in America but also everywhere around the world and the genres are quite similar to our nation. I really enjoy the way the author interprets and uses lyrics as symbolization that relates to everyday life and desires. As Groenewegen said, just like traditional Chinese landscape paintings cannot be reduced to a single perspective. Soon, I was making connections. One of them, a marketing expert, suggested that I do LinkedIn profile reviews for free. â€Å"Free?† my non-marketing brain protested. But since I knew pretty much nothing about marketing at the time, I trusted him. Thus, LinkedIn profile reviews from The Essay Expert were born. I got an overwhelming response and completed 25 free reviews in no time; soon I was offering 25 reviews for $25. Those went like hotcakes too. One of the first connections I made through LinkedIn caught wind of my budding LinkedIn expertise and referred me to Ellen Ingraham, a fellow Yale alumna. Amazingly, just about all the advice in the interview is still applicable today. Like how to attract recruiters, get good recommendations, and stay active on LinkedIn.
